Fern
A fern is a leafy, vascular, flowerless plant, which grows in high humid regions. Generally, these flourishing greenish ferns are diverse or dissimilar from the other vascular plants. Several vascular plants nurture directly from the seeds, whereas a fern grows from a spore and this intermediate phase or step is known as gametophyte.
A fern consists of a collection or group of about 20,000 species of plant life. Ferns are similar to mosses as they contain xylem and phloem and so it is a common vascular plant. Ferns belong to the Pteridophyta division, but Leptosporangiate ferns are largest group among the species.
Fern is an ancient kind of flowerless plant. The initial fern plant was discovered in a Devonian period as a fossil record. These fossil ferns emerged in the early Carboniferous era, which is about three hundred and sixty million years ago.
Fern have a different life cycle in comparison with the other seed plants. It is a thalloid green mass (gametophyte) and ascendant frond (sporophyte). A fern has a diploid period that produces haploid spores. The gametophyte spores produces gametes, which later on emerges as a distinctive fern plant. These garden plants have a longest life span and few of them are better indoor growers.
The fern plants have a distinguishing height, texture, range, shape and are available in numerous sizes, right from the smallest to the largest. The stems, leaves, roots, prothallus and rhizomes are similar to the other vascular plants. Most of the species discard or shed their foliage annually, but the evergreen ferns have fascinating foliage. These species grow in almost all kinds of climate and are extremely drought resistant. Ferns prefer moisture-retaining soil.
Ferns are small and low-lying shrug plants, which are generally added to yards, estate and gardens for visual, artistic and aesthetic purposes.
There are different types of ferns. They are listed below:
Lady fern: These low-lying fascinating ferns are immensely admired and well accepted since Victorian era. Mostly found in rainy deciduous forests.
Sensitive fern: These flowerless ferns are moderate to outsized, and are found in marshy and humid regions.
Cinnamon fern: These vascular plants are remarkably noted for its cinnamon-colored fiddleheads, and are found all over the globe.
Staghorn fern: It appears as the name suggests. It is available in tropical wild forests.
