Flowering Shrubs

Introduction

Flowering shrubs are those that flowers throughout the year. Just one picture is worth a thousand words. Same is the view of the beautiful flowers and shrubs. One can see the miracles of the nature when in the hot summer, the land cracks and there is very hot air in the atmosphere. This miracle is the beautiful heart taking view of the shrubs, which comes forth from the branches of many trees. However, not only in summer, these shrubs can grow in winter too.

What is a shrub? Flowering Shrubs

A shrub has multiple stems, usually of short height about (5-6) meter tall. They can be distinguished from trees based on their height and multiple stems. A plant is distinguished as either shrubs or trees depending on their growing conditions.

Why use shrubs?

Shrubs are of great use as they can provide proper shape and structure to your yards. Shrubs are of great help when they help you to hide the unsightly necessities, they can be either foundations or unattractive fencing. In addition, shrubs have a distinguished quality of long-lasting as compared to the flowers. Shrubs are mainly used as it provides curve and mounds, which makes it very attractive and eye-catching.

Categorizations of flowering shrubs based on botany and ecology

Botany and ecology describes the shrubs more specifically as one, which grows up to a height less than 8 metre and normally has many stems at or near their base.

Based on their height shrubs have been categorized in the following way:

For shrubs 2-8 meters high:

  • Closed scrub - have dense foliage cover (70-100) %
  • Open scrub - have mid dense foliage cover (30-70) %
  • Tall shrub land - sparse foliage cover (10-30) %
  • Tall open shrub land - very sparse foliage cover (<10) %

For shrubs 2 meter high:

  • Closed heath - dense foliage cover (70-100) %
  • Open heath - mid dense foliage cover (30-70) %
  • Low shrub land - sparse foliage cover (10-30) %
  • Low open shrub land - very sparse foliage cover (<10) %

Classification of Flowering Shrubs:

Flowering shrubs are classified into three groups based on the sunlight they require to grow, they are:

Shrubs that grow in full sun:

These types of shrubs love sun light. They grow more properly when they get proper sun light. The examples for the shrubs, which grow in full sun, are Duranta repens variegata, Coleus, Hibiscus rosa sinensis, and Tabernaemontana.

Shrubs grow in shade:

These types of shrubs grow properly in shady areas. The examples for these types of shrubs are Magnolia pumilla, Nandina domestica, Calliandre brevipes and Mussaenda erythrophylla. These types of shrubs scorch during the hot weather.

Shrubs, which grow in both sunny and shady areas:

These type of shrubs grow well in both the conditions either they get full sunlight or either in the shady areas. The examples of these types of shrubs are Jatropha panduraefolia, Ravenia spectabilis, Brunfelsia undulata, Crossandra, Turnera ulmifolia, etc.

The flowering shrubs just need proper care to grow. It helps to add beauty to your garden. One should plan properly about the size and location before planting these shrubs, so that it should tower over other plants. Therefore, plant these shrubs and get blessed with these beautiful miracles of the nature.
