Garden Predators

Garden predators are the predators, which prove very beneficial to the healthy and lush green plants in the garden. These predators mainly feed on the pests and other insects. The various kinds of garden predators includes, ladybugs, mantises, lacewings, herons, aphids, bugs, spider mites, beetles, wasps, etc. Most of the garden predators have innocuous habits, as they feed on pest species. The garden predators also include insect parasite, which are deposited by the adult parasite. The very general insect parasites are the flies and wasps.

Various kinds of Garden Predators: Garden Predators

  • Ladybugs: Ladybugs belongs to the order Hemitepra. The ladybugs are the voracious predators of aphids like, black fly and green-fly, mites, insects, caterpillars, etc. These predatory garden bugs are usually small and tiny, that is, less than 1/8 inch in size. The ladybug is one of the natural instinctive killers, which protects the foliage of the plants, from various kinds of pests. The ladybug is very close and common to the beetles as it has multiple colored markings. Commonly the ladybugs are termed as nabid bugs. These bugs are most significantly found on the foliage or flora of all crops and garden plants. These ladybugs are generally found in yards and gardens.
  • Mantises: Mantises belongs to the order Mantodea. It is found in temperate and tropical environment or surrounding as these are general predators. These garden predators feed on harmful insects like aphids, spider mites, beetles, crickets, etc. The mantises usually prey on advantageous and neutral insects. These predators are even termed as praying mantises, as they are exclusively predatory. The mantises are generally diurnal, but numerous of them soar at night. Most of these predators get involve in cannibalism. The mantises are used as a biological pest control in the gardens.
  • Lacewings: Lacewings belongs to the order of Neuroptera. They are identified as lacewings as they are widely net-winged insects. The lacewings are commonly found in the tropical environment, as they are majorly predatory. These garden predators nourish on thrips, aphids, mites and various arthropods. Lacewings are supportive ordinary and natural predators. These garden predators are similar like the mantises. Adult lacewings feed on larger and superior pests. The lacewings are used as a natural pest control in the gardens.
  • Herons: Herons belongs to the order Ardeidae. These predators are also termed as egrets or bitterns. The herons are widely spread in distribution, and usually found near the watery surroundings like lake, rivers, ponds, swamps, etc. These garden predators commonly feed on larger and superior pests and insects.
  • Beetles: Beetles belongs to the order Coleoptera. Usually these garden predators originate, underneath the debris. They commonly nourish on insects like thrips, aphids, arthropods, etc. which are also found under the remains or debris.
  • Hoverflies: Hoverflies belongs to the order Diptera. These garden predators are also termed as syrphid flies or flower flies. Their features are very similar to wasps and bees and most of the hoverflies are brightly colored. The hoverflies generally feeds on spider mites, caterpillars, aphids, and even on flowers, etc.
