Lawns

Lawns come in varieties of shapes and sizes, right from formal lawns to rough grassland in an orchard. It has multiple functions, be it somewhere to relax, a foil for the plants, or play area for children. There are multiple ways to plant a lawn: seed, sod, plugs and sprigs. In it seed is a traditional form and relatively low in cost.

History of the lawn:Lawns From middle ages onward the lawns became popular with the nobility in the Europe. In early ages, there was no difference between pastureland and lawns, but due to the damp climatic conditions, it was likely to grow and control lawns. In 1830, lawns were handled very differently as they were considered as an element of wealthy states and manor houses. The original meaning of "lawn" was the area of grass grazed by sheep, horses or rabbits. The gardening began in the early 17th century and this was the period where closely cut "English" lawn came into existence. In the Victorian era, more plants were introduced and lawns became small flowerbeds filled with sculptures, perennials and water features. Western landscape style brought the lawn to many parts of the world by 20th century.

Lawn care and maintenance: Lawn care varies depending on the type of lawn is grown and its climatic conditions.

  • Planting: The initial seasons to seed, lay sod, 'sprig' new lawns are the early summer, spring and autumn. This is the time when the air is cooler and the soil is warmer. Seeding is inexpensive and takes long time to establish. Instant lawn is provided by sodding and can be grown in most temperate climates while it is more expensive. Plugs and sprigs are planted apart to grow together.
  • Maintenance: Organic and inorganic or synthetic fertilizers are obtainable with immediate applications. In order to maintain an attractive lawn, the techniques such as biological pest control, organic fertilizers, beneficial insects and other methods are used.
  • Mowing: To maintain a rough lawn it requires only occasional cutting. Lawn care in summer requires raising the lawn mower for cool season grass and lowering it for warm season grass. Frequent watering must be done for healthy growth, especially in early mornings as it strengthens the root system. Lawn in autumn must be mowed at lower height and this is the correct time to add sandy loam and fertilizer for a better growth. To maintain a high visibility in lawn it requires caring procedures such as mowing regularly at even heights, mowing when lawn is dry, not to remove 30% to 40% of plant tissue, to remove dead grass, alternating the cut direction from previous mowing, rolling, top- dressing with soil and sand aeration.

Private gardens and parks are the common feature of lawns and they are created for an aesthetic pleasure and for recreational use.
