Ornamental plants or garden plants are cultivated and herbaceous wild plants. Typically, these herbaceous non-woody plants are cultivated in flower garden and as house plants. These herbaceous ornamental plants are rarely indigenous, and are introduced in every part of the country.

Ornamental plants are divided into numerous groups like, trees or shrubs, grasses, bulbs, perennials, annuals and biennials. The trees and shrubs consists of leafy and conifer types, evergreen and deciduous plants. These plants are available in variety of shapes, sizes and colors. They are appropriate to an extensive range or array of climates, landscapes and certain gardening needs. Primarily, it is grown for viewing, accent, specimen, shade or color and for any other aesthetic reasons.

Ornamental plants are slightly dissimilar from the utilitarian and crop plants. Characteristically, the leaves, flowers, stems, foliage texture and bark consist of certain extraordinary features, which are extremely prominent.

Categorically, these ornamental plants are of five different types such as:

Annuals: Annuals are derived from a Latin word "annus", which means "year". This seasonal ornamental plants blooms only for 3-4 months. Typically, these are grown from seeds. These plants emerge from the seed, produce flowers and seeds during the growth period and later on die, within a year regardless of the environmental conditions. These plants are immense and grand for creating an instantaneous effect and supplementing or adding a color to the garden. These annual plants give a panoramic view to the surrounding. Annuals are used for decorating borders and edges.

Biennials: Biennials are derived from a Latin word "biennis", which means "two years". This plant requires two years to complete their life cycle. This ornamental plant grows from a seed, blooms and dies the following year. Botanically, biennial is a short-lived perennial. Biennials are used for bedding purposes.

Perennials: Perennials are derived from a Latin word "perennis", which means "several years". Usually, these plants are herbaceous, which once established, continues to produce flowers every season.

Shrubs: These are woody plants, which are shorter than trees. These ornamental plants have tiny stems that branch near the ground.

Bulbs: It is a particular stem that is planted beneath the soil. These are easy growing plants, which grows, blooms and later on disappear entirely until next year.
